I have never swapped an engine out of a Cherokee, do I have to remove the grille and condenser to get it out, or just the hood? Any other tips? Does anyone know what year engines will work? It is a 94 grand cherokee laredo 2 wheel drive auto.

You dont need to take off the grill but you only have like a credit cards width if you dont. They just yanked a 4.0 out of a cherokee (allbeit a 4wd one) in jp mag like two months ago. They were going to put in a 4.7. Try and find that. They took off the grill for the install though.

I, personally, do not remove the grill to remove the engine from an XJ. Remove the fan, radiator, and anything else between the engine and grill. I've put in 5 of them.

Thanks for the replies. Anyone know what year engines will interchange, or what the differences are in the 4 liters? I believe 91-94 will work, but will 95 or newer?

i believe in 95 the electronics got changed2 obdII, but you can find a used 2000 or newer 4.0l engine with wiring harness and everything including gas tank fuel sending unit everything ready to run for 1500$ plus shipping just got one for a swap im doing on an 89 yj they work well just know about what tranny you are swapping it 2 the ax15 (stick) was replaced in 1999 wich DC changed the bearing in the crankshaft for the new trannys so u have to machine a small adapter... also i would remove the front grill radiator support it always makes for an easier swap on anything mid size. just my advice.. oh and another thing with the new stuff comes the need to change the dash but with the yj i modify it by removing everything and spot welding a sheet across the whole thing then using the new style gauge pod with all gauges mount it either in the center or above the column like factory it makes it look more cj like but does the trick for simplicity wise.
