I have a carburated 3.1 liter in my 86XJ and would like to switch to a throttle body injection. Does anyone know if I can get the system out of another GM with the same motor? What parts will I need to get out of the donor car?
Thanks,
Chad

I dont know if its possable but I dont think its worth it. The V6 was a POS to begin with, I would sway in a 4.0L HO. I picked up my motor with the rest of the drivetrain for $700, it only had 70k on it too.

Chad that is a 2.8 l motor in the 86xj, same pos as some s-10's, I know that some people have swapped in the 4.x l 6 from newer S-10's sucessfully, but the 2.8 l motor is a waste for the effort you would go through. I would go for the extra ponies.

Thanks for the feedback.
The reality is that my XJ came with a 2.8 liter that went, and, for better or worse, I rebuilt it to a 3.1 liter and cammed it, and it only has a couple of thousand miles on it since the rebuild. It actually does great now, and the 3.1 liter crankshafts are supposed to be pretty strong. The only bad thing about the 2.8 liters, aside from being a little short on power, is that they had a poor crankshaft design.
All that said, I would like to switch to the fuel injection so that I don't sputter on steep inclines, which occasionally occurs.
Thanks again,
Chad

3.1 ltr 60 degree v6 right? You'd want to go digging for early 90s Z24 cavaliers. I used to have one (the only car I've owned before the Jeep). Rebuilt the fuel injection on it, it was a pretty simple setup. Should adapt ok to a Jeep, wasn't really tall or anything. That would give you MPFI.

If you only wanted throttle body you could got looking for late 80s S-10s with the 2.8. That's what they were running. We had one of those also, I'd recommend the MPFI swap though, it seemed to run also smoother in that configuration.

Or you might be able to run the holley setup, though the 650 or so CFM they nomrally are might be a little too much for that little motor.

Thanks for the info Alosix, the mpfi sounds intriguing. I guess for that I would need the intake manifold also - may either way though. I'm curious what I'll need as far as brains/wiring go.
Dakota - thanks for doing your swap and write-up a year after I rebuilt mine! Maybe next time!? I wonder if I could light up the tires if I went with nitrous?

Hello Again - time to re-visit this topic. Can anyone tell me all the parts I will need to dig out of a donor vehicle for the EFI swap? Obviously the throttle body, but what else? Thanks, Chad.

Just a thought, how about an after market setup. I know Holly has some that will work and can be ajusted for differant cams and stuff. But they may be a little $$$$$$$$

Thanks for the feedback. I've looked at the Holly stuff and heard good reports, but I'm afraid that if I put anything new on the Jeep it might reject it - like a donated organ! Oh yeah, and my whole budget for this XJ is like $2.00, and that includes bumpers, rock rails, a winch, full cage, etc... Might take me awhile to finish that list, then there'll be more. Thanks again, Chad.
