Ran into an odd situation this week … My son has a 1999 4.0 Cherokee, he had to merge fast the other day and stomped on it. He looked in the rear view mirror and saw a big cloud of white smoke, pulled over then to see what the h#ll was wrong. Oil all over the undercarriage, smoke coming from oil on the exhaust pipes. He dropped off his Jeep at my house and took my Jeep (good to have a spare). I pulled the cover off the bell housing to look to see if the rear main seal was “blown” but it looks fine. Not even leaking now, been a week and still no more leaks, and it has not repeated to problem.

Oil level is good (not over filled) and the engine is running fine.

Anyone ever heard of this before?

My son had a similar problem. It was the auto transmission pucking. It happened when he would be climbing a grade into mountains. He's running 33x9.5 BFG MT's on 3.55 gears. Just a thought.

Thanks for the response... We thought of that but this was definately motor oil. The transmission is full, But with this in mind we will keep an eye the trans also.
