Just lined up a deal on an '82 Scrambler with a Howell injected 401 in it. It has no smog equipment to speak of (aftermarket air cleaner, exhaust, and fuel system). I bought it inspite of the engine 'cause I really liked the rest of the build. Unfortunately I live in CA (Fresno) and would like to get it registered/licensed eventually. So, I'd appreciate some opinons/your experince:

Is there any realistic/reasonable way to get the 401 to pass as an engine swap? I don't know the year of the engine to establish what OEM smog equip. is needed. Am I better off finding a complete 258 and reversing the swap (it has a NV4500 trans in it now BTW). Do you know if DMV will register/title it in my name and then do an immediate "non-op" to buy me time to get these issues sorted out?

Thanks for your advice...

Please PM me if you happen to know a good local smog guy!
