The standard TJ is too short for a klune - most people run an Atlas II and a CV drive shaft. That was my setup - even with the shorter Atlas II I still needed a CV drive shaft and it sat at 18 degrees - almost the maximum.
If you were to get a newer LJ - Unlimited - frame and body there would be another ten inches for shaft or a new box. The newer Atlas Four speed is only five inches longer so that would mean you would have four gears for range and still have another five inches for the drive shaft. It all comes down to the shaft length and the lift height - if you bobed you rear and moved the diff back you could also get more room that way. |

Thought I would make an update to this thread.
The standard (non-unlimted) TJ is not too short for a Klune. I have been running a klune in mine, and have talked with several other TJs who have Klunes, since the last time I posted in this forum. To run a Klune in a TJ, you pretty much have to go one of three ways. 1) run the super-shortest SYE and CV shaft, with the NP231. 2) swap the NP231 for a ebDana 20, and a CV Shaft. (what I now run) 3) move the motor and tranny forward, then put the Klune in to keep rear DS length (still with SYE) I have been running my Klune/Dana 20 combo for about half-a-year, and love it. I pretty much can spend the entire day on the trails, without using either the brake, or the gas-pedal. With the low-gearing, I can pretty-much crawl most anything by just crawling in the 500-1200 RPM range. It won't stall, even standing on the brakes, in the two lowest gear-ratios(162:1 and 195:1). The D20 is also twin-sticked, so I get the use of 2Lo on either end if I want it. If anyone is interested in running a Klune, it is possible in a TJ. You could also get the same effect by running the new Atlas 4speed(10:1). Click Here for: My Jeeps and their Specs Nashville, TN (Franklin) Lon. 86'54.285' W Lat. 35'58.310' N Alt. 610' |

I am running a 2.72:1 Klune and a 4:1 flipped Dana 300 in my TJ. I basically have 3 ranges and have been very happy with it (the Klune) ever since I installed it.
