even though it's great to hear about people using their SUVs for what they're built for, it's still not a great positive article for the offroad community ...
quote:
"I've had as much as 3 inches of mud caked on the roof," McDaniel says. "I leave the mud on for a few days to show it off."

and quotes like these don't help either Wink

BTW: did I mention that I hate mud with a passion Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

I've re-read the article and it tends to go off topic.

yes, but that's in the nature of most reporters ... more than likely not even the fault of the people interviewed (reporters just using the notes or comments that fit what THEY want to write)

Stupid When talking to the media/reporters, you have to be very careful what you say ,and how you say it. These folks usually have no problems (read: morals and ethics )twisting things to make a story more marketable.

I found an area this weekend along a parking lot access road by several restaraunts where individuals have been going off the pavement for the sole purpose of getting mud on their vehicles. A new fad for posers I guess. In reality, their environmental impact is far less than the land developer's. But we all know the general public won't see it that way!

That is exactly right. The vehicles I ussually see covered in mud for a week are the Ford Super-duties w/12" lifts and four sets of shocks. They will not go on a "trail." They just look for a field after the rain. Then they dig ruts in someones private property and it reflects on alll of us.
The funny thing is that out here in the desert the mud is very alkaline. (Ever seen the white film on top after a rain) They leave that mud on their paint and under cariage for a week or more to help eat it away.
Don't get me wrong...I love the Super-duty. I own an F-250. It is stock height with air bags and a slide in camper. It can be seen towing a trailer with my YJ on it.
Trucks are "MADE" for hauling and towing. (That is why they have a bed and hitch and the comercials show them towing stuff)
Jeeps are "BUILT" for trails.

I'm with you 100%, sure everyones Jeep gets the mud treatment during it's lifetime, But When you get home, ususally it's pressure washer time. Working on the underside of a mud caked chassis is a BIG PITA, and not usually great for things like the diffs when pulling the covers, etc...
