Great news....Sounds like things are going great for this 4Wheel Drive area!

Trail System: The Gulches

Contact: Predator 4 Wheel Drive, llc 719-528-5790

On Friday April 28, 2006, Predator 4 Wheel Drive, LLC and Teller County signed an agreement allowing Predator 4WD and its volunteers to do trail maintenance that will open the trails in the Hayman burn area also know as The Gulches. This process has been an on going effort since the fire, but the results will be worth the wait. The volunteer agreement requires volunteers to sign up on a master list. They must provide name, address, phone number and date of birth. No volunteers under the age of eight will be allowed. These are the requirements of Teller Countys liability carrier and can not be waived.

Sign up will available at both Predator 4WD, LLC locations: 4260 North Nevada Avenue and 3711 Drennan Road during normal business hours. Volunteers will need to read and agree with the Adopt-A-Trail agreement before signing up. Volunteers may also be required to attend a safety meeting before they can help with trail maintenance. Times and terms for safety meetings are still being worked out. All the trail maintenance work must first be approved by both the Forest Service and Teller County. The first stage of work will be to install locked gates at all trail heads. We ask that people do not drive any of the trails until they are officially opened. Driving the trails without authorization may jeopardize the opening of the trails. Absolutely no one will be allowed on trails without being on a master list and signing in and out on the days of trail maintenance.

Predator 4WD, LLC has been doing trail work in the Gulches for more than 15 years. Predator 4WD, LLC spear headed the effort to open the trails and was backed by the Colorado Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs. It is the collective resources and volunteers that will make this endeavor possible. Many clubs, businesses, and individuals have already donated funds to help with supplies for trail repairs. The plans are to have Metberry opened for the summer of 2006 followed by Longwater Gulch and Hackett Gulch. How well people respect the closures and the work that is done, will determine how fast the other trails will open. The allowed uses of the Gulches have changed since the fire. When Metberry Gulch opens, a lot of attention will be focused on whether vehicles stay on marked trails and follow regulations including fires and shooting. Driving off the trails or around cables can cause the closure of the trails. Some of the trails that many of us have been driving on for years will be closed permanently and vegetated. Please pass the word to Stay the Trail. It is critical to the future of the Gulches that vehicles stay on the designated trails. Because these roads are now Teller County easements, Teller County has the authority to close the roads. The Teller County Sheriff will also be available to enforce laws and ticket individuals. Tickets to violators and vandals will be serious. It will be the responsibility of the off road community to make sure that users understand the rules and obey them. To help ensure the future of the trails, report violators. This is a great day in the off-road community and we have a great opportunity ahead of us. It will require a united effort of community and a self vigilance to ensure that future generations have the opportunities to motorized recreation in the Gulches.
