I personaly prefer '75-'77 because they are smaller, yet still have 44 front, 9" rear, power steering and disk brakes. And I don't really care for the 351M-400 that most of the '78-'79s have.

'74 bronco, to much list
'03 rubi, stock
'85 toy, 5:29s,birf elims
'06 GTO, spice red,m6,18s

check out www.jamesduff.com they have really good quality lifts for eb's. They also make a flex lift made for rock crawling.

Sorta depends on where your buddy lives? Whether he is going to Drive it to and from places or trailer it? And most importantly, What can he find in the way of vehicles.

From what I've seen the 1st generation of Bronco's up to 77, seem to be the most popular for Rock Crawling, probably has something to do with their size (similar in size to a Jeep), their resemblance to an International Scout and their basically cool looks.

The Second Generation of Bronco's 78-79 also quite popular. I get asked at least 10 times a year if i want to sell my brother's that i am working on. And although they do have 351M/400M motors, it's the same bolt pattern at the trans as a 429/460. Motor mount towers on the frame will have to be changed along with some other stuff.
But they are pretty stout.

When it comes to the later years. I start getting a little weary of Twin-Traction I Beam on a Full Size truck, and 8.8" axles in the rear, but I have seen them crawling around.
